Cost Sector Catering magazine Care Catering Award – recognising best-in-class

On 31 March, Anglia Crown once again sponsored the Cost Sector Catering magazine Care Catering award. And, as in previous years, it was a great opportunity to take a look just how far the industry has come in tackling malnutrition, and how high current standards are.

The risk of malnutrition, and finding ways to prevent it, is a major focus in care homes. So rewarding professionals who find effective ways to meet residents’ nutritional requirements is really important. This year’s winner was Martin Rowe, Chef Manager at Quantum Care’s Elmhurst Care Home, in Bishop’s Stortford. Martin was nominated both by residents and their families.

The judging panel found that Elmhurst assesses all new residents using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST). As a Registered Dietitian, I know just how important a tool MUST is for ensuring residents maintain good nutritional health. Martin and his team plan menus according to each individual’s assessment, then provide a specially designed nutrition and hydration programme for anyone that needs it. Martin oversees every aspect of their catering to monitor performance and meet the diverse dietary needs of all residents. Congratulations to him!

At Anglia Crown we’re doing our bit, too. Our Crown Advantage smaller appetite are a good choice for elderly patients. The smaller portions still give them a nutritionally complete meal, but they’re more likely to finish everything on their plate, and with 39 main courses to choose from, residents have a wide choice at mealtimes. It also offers lots of softer options for those with chewing difficulties, and higher energy dishes for those who need them.
